how we created a greener website
Our website was intentionally designed to use less energy and emit fewer carbon emissions per view. The average web page emits around 0.80 g CO₂e per view. That means a site with 10,000 monthly views produces around 102 kg of CO₂e annually, about the same amount of carbon eleven trees absorb in a year.
The internet already accounts for 3.7% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a number expected to double by 2025.
These facts inspired our founder to create a website that leaves a lighter digital footprint. By focusing on simplicity and efficiency, we've cut our emissions without compromising accessibility.
how we did it
SYSTEM FONTS
We use just one system font: Arial. While it might seem like a small detail, fonts can impact energy use. Custom fonts are hosted on external servers, requiring energy every time they're loaded, By sticking with a native system font, we avoid unnecessary data requests and reduce our digital footprint.
IMAGES
Our site is entirely typography-based, aside from our logo. Since we're not seeing products, images aren't essential to our content. Limiting visuals to just our logo (white in the header and green in the favicon) helps cut energy use while preserving our identity.
ONE-PAGE LAYOUT
All our important information lives on a single scrolling page, so users can find what they need quickly and efficiently. This minimises the need to load multiple pages, reducing overall data use and emissions.
DARK MODE
We originally launched our website with a light background and green accents (our brand colours), but later switched to dark mode. Darker interfaces consume less energy on many screens and offer better accessibility for users who find darker screens easier on the eyes.
GREEN HOSTING
Our founder built the site herself using Wix, a platform powered by renewable energy. Though not a web designer, she wanted to show that anyone can make sustainable choices, no matter their background.
According to the Website Carbon Calculator, our site receives a B rating and emits just 0.30 g of CO₂ per view. We aim to reduce this amount even further in the future.
Our efforts have already inspired others to build their own low-impact websites. We hope to keep inspiring others, and continue growing a community committed to meaningful, sustainable change.
